In a world, where people are striving hard for academic excellence and earn money, people tend to forget to give their bodies something to enjoy or push the limits. In this race for academic brilliance many people give up their passion to take up sports as a career. Most parents don’t allow their children to take up sports as a mode of occupation. Even if we do not take sports as a career option, we can certainly play many sports at regular intervals to keep us fit and healthy.

Playing any sport regularly makes us fit, active, fresh and social. They teach us a lesson of coordination and discipline. Playing a sport not only keeps you physically fit but also keeps one’s mind fresh and sound. A healthy mind dwells in a healthy body.

Games and sports are an important means of recreation. After their studies during the day students require some recreation in the evening. Keeping PT periods during the school time gives the students an opportunity to freshen up their minds and show case their skills in any sport.

One great quality of playing a team sport is that it develops the leadership quality of a person. It brings out the leader in oneself. It will encourage him/her to coordinate with his/her teammates. Sports evoke a sense of fair play in one’s life. Brings out the sportsmanship in a person. Children playing any sport will learn to respect his/her coach, opponents and officials of the sport. Sport teaches children the important lesson of team-spirit and it gives them the experience of working with different kinds of people in different situations.

Playing sports enables children to create friendships they otherwise might not have formed. Sports and games can be a great lesson in time management and they provide the spirit of competition that drives them to give extra effort. Through sports children learn to respect authority and rules. Sport increases self-esteem, mental alertness and it reduces stress and anxiety.

No other thing in life affords children such opportunity to develop positive character traits and to soak up many quality values as sports does.

Sports should be encouraged by parents and teachers. Children first need to get used to playing sports, accept it and get to like it. It will become part of his or her everyday life. Let them see the values of sports for themselves. As teachers and parents we must be the example. We must make sports and games fun and we must play by the rules. Viewing games or playing sports together often facilitates emotional bonding and develops a love for the game.

As long as a child is involved in sports, he/she will learn how to overcome obstacles and challenges that will come his/her way.

As there is a saying, “ All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy “. So we must take care that we do not become dull and instead get involved in some or the other sports.
